First Reinterpretation

Porsche Design the innovative sports and lifestyle label for men introduced men’s titanium sunglasses. The first reinterpretation of the legendary Porsche Design P’8478 titanium sunglasses in more than 40 years highlighted as the brand’s hero style in its 2016 eyewear campaign.

Sold more than 9 million times since the launch of the P’8478 in 1978, this model is one of the most successful classics of Porsche Design. Emphasizing the connection to motor sports as part of Porsche Design’s DNA, a special campaign was shot staring Mark Webber, the reigning 2015 FIA World Endurance Championship winner.

As a material, titanium is a key to uncompromising quality standard and provides outstanding durability and lightness at the same time – distinctive performance benefits for both correction eyewear as well as sunglasses. Like its predecessor, the P’8678 sunglasses convince with a frame made out of pure titanium. The unique lens shape and characteristic nose bridge were kept, but the modernized form carries the unmistakable look into a new era. The revolutionary replaceable lens technology of the P’8478 was further developed for the P’8678 by the Design Studio in Zellam See, Austria. During the design process, expertise from Porsche Design Timepieces AG, based in Solothurn, in Switzerland, was applied to the eyewear design and the interchangeable lens locking mechanism.

Inspired by modern watch clasps made of titanium, the new locking mechanism allows a comfortable, quick, and safe replacement of the lenses and hence an easy adaptation to different light conditions. Each pair of sunglasses comes with an additional set of sun protection lenses in a different shade, providing a casual and equally sporty elegant look.
